Diabetes Eye Complications

Blindness is one of the complications that often comes with diabetes and type 2 diabetes. As much as none of us would wish to suffer from eye complications, this is something that diabetic patients have to live with as a common reality.

Unlike people not suffering from diabetes, 40% of diabetic patients are at risk of contacting glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye disease that results from excess pressure within the eye. In most cases, this pressure tampers with the nerves of the eye and the retina, which sometimes leads to partial or total blindness. Therefore if you are experiencing eye problems, it's essential for you to visit an eye specialist before it's too late.

Another eye problem that is often experienced by diabetic patients is retinopathy. Experts in the diabetes field say that increased levels of sugar in the blood result in increased inflammation which in turn damages the capillary vessels. The eye has a number of capillary vessels so it is easy for diabetic patients to develop eye complications. Retinopathy is categorized into two conditions: proliferative retinopathy and non-proliferative retinopathy.

The capillary walls in non-proliferative retinopathy condition normally lose their strength and can't control the movement of substances between the retina and blood. This usually leads to loss of vision in diabetic patients since there's a surplus of fluid in the eye.

The capillary walls in proliferative retinopathy condition are excessively damaged when the capillaries are blocked. This results in the formation of extra branches by the capillary vessels. The extra branches formed are not usually strong and therefore tend to leak out blood which blocks one's vision. Due to the new capillary vessels, scar tissues are more likely to develop and this can deform the retina leading to eye problems.

Despite the fact that some of these eye problems can be treated, it's best to prevent them from happening. It's essential for you to have an expert that can guide you on how to go about the whole process of controlling and managing your diabetic condition and the levels of sugar in your blood.
