Hashimoto's Disease

In the United States Hashimoto's disease or Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the number one cause of hypothyroidism. Hashimoto's is largely missed as a diagnosis in today's health care system. Basic thyroid testing, or TSH testing, is not enough to show whether this disease is present or not, so many people, especially women, go undiagnosed. This article will begin to provide some information about Hashimoto's disease and its consequences if left untreated.

In simple terms Hashimoto's disease or Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease. In an auto immune disease the immune system becomes confused and begins attacking your own body's tissue. If your immune system is attacking your thyroid you will see over time that your thyroid hormone levels will decrease. As you lose thyroid tissue, you lose the ability to produce thyroid hormone, and this can lead to all the symptoms of low thyroid or hypothyroidism.

Hashimoto's is more prevalent in women, but can also happen in men. It is also known that today approximately 90% of the population with hypothyroidism suffers from Hashimoto's disease or Hashimoto's thyroiditis. What that means is that approximately 90% of the population with thyroid problems actually has an autoimmune disease that leads to their thyroid problems.

This is a really big deal, because if this is correct it means that the majority of people with hypothyroidism are not receiving the treatment that they desperately need. It may be appropriate to give someone with Hashimoto's disease extra thyroid hormones, but there is certainly more that needs to be done. Ignoring the immune system in Hashimoto's disease cases is a huge problem, and is the reason that many women never feel good even though their TSH test is coming back normal according to their doctor.

Thyroid problems cannot be treated with a one size fits all approach. It has not worked for millions of people so far and it will not work in the future. You must get to the source of the problem to help people with this devastating disease.
