What Causes Hashimoto's Disease?
The standard of care for thyroid problems doesn't have much room today for asking the question of "what causes Hashimoto's disease". We know this because even if you have Hashimoto's disease your medical treatment will be the same. If your thyroid hormone level is low you'll get prescription thyroid medication, and if your thyroid hormone level is normal you won't get thyroid hormone medication. It's 2011 as this article is being written and there is so much more that can be done to help people with thyroid problems, especially Hashimoto's disease.
A quick search of the internet will show you that many people are giving advice about what causes Hashimoto's disease and what you can do about it don't actually know what it is that they are giving advice about. They talk about the fact that Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune problem, meaning that the immune system is actually responsible for the problem, but they don't give any advice about how to improve the function of the immune system.
Let me ask you a logical question. If Hashimoto's disease is a problem with the immune system attacking the thyroid gland, a problem that in the beginning was not started by the thyroid gland, why are the treatments that are available today focused on the thyroid gland? Shouldn't we be working on fixing what's wrong with the immune system or whatever caused the immune system to get off track? If you're thinking logically while reading this you should be a little confused about what I just asked you. You should be asking yourself why your doctor has probably never mentioned that you have an autoimmune disease, and why you are only having your thyroid hormone medication adjusted, to fix a problem that didn't start in the thyroid gland at all.
For the majority of people that have autoimmune diseases today, the problem started in their digestive system. Poor eating habits, stress, and other factors can break down the integrity of your digestive system which can lead to leaky gut syndrome. As your gut becomes permeable, small food particles can pass into the bloodstream, which are then attacked by the immune system. This is usually the beginning of what can become multiple autoimmune diseases in the body such as Hashimoto's disease.
It's time that we move out of the dark ages and begin looking at the research that is available today. There is so much that can be done to help people with Hashimoto's disease and most of our healthcare system today is ignoring the research. It's not because they don't care, it's because they don't have time to research your body and figure out your problem. So what can you do?
