Hypothyroidism and Hormone Imbalances

There are a number of different hormone imbalances that can be caused in females that have hypothyroidism. A few of those pathways are listed below:

1.    Hypothyroidism can cause a decreased release of FSH which can lead to improper follicle development and possible infertility or abnormal menstrual cycles.

2.    Hypothyroidism can lead to suppressed LH which can lead to progesterone receptor insensitivity and or abnormal progesterone distribution which can lead to abnormal menstrual cycles and infertility.

3.    Hypothyroidism can lead to decreased urinary excretion of cortisol and eventual cortisol dysregulation.

4.    Hypothyroidism can lead to increased adrenal cortex activity and cortisol dysregulation.

Males can also be affected by hypothyroidism. Some of the possible pathways are listed below:

1.     Hypothyroidism in a male can lead to decreased FSH and LH, which leads to faulty testicular stimulation and decreased testosterone synthesis. This eventually leads to andropause disorder, or male menopause.

2.    Hypothyroidism can also lead to decreased urinary excretion of cortisol and cortisol dysregulation.

3.    Hypothyroidism can also cause decreased leydig cell testosterone synthesis and eventual male andropause disorder.

The pathways listed above are complex and not fully understood by most health care professionals today. They are all a part of the intricate system of hormones that make up your endocrine system. Doctors today that have been trained in functional endocrinology or functional medicine are able to look through these pathways and get a good understanding of where the cause of the problem is.
