Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid fails to produce enough thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is responsible for activating the metabolism of all the cells in the body, so it's easy to see why a lack of thyroid hormone can cause so many problems for people. The video below discusses hypothyroidism and some of the causes of it.
If you have had your thyroid tested by you medical doctor it's very likely that they ran a TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Test). TSH works in an inverse relationship to the amount of thyroid hormone that you have in your body. If your thyroid hormone is low your TSH level will be high and this qualifies you as having hypothyroidism.
It's important to realize that there is more to understanding your hypothyroidism problem than just running a TSH test. TSH is great for diagnosing hypothyroidism, but if a complete thyroid panel is not done, you could be missing a lot of other clues to the cause of the problem.
One instance where this would be true would be in the case of Hashimoto's hypothyroidism. Hashimoto's hypothyroidism is more of a complication of the immune system, than a problem of the thyroid. The immune system is actually attacking the thyroid which leads to a lack of thyroid hormone. The TSH test can discover a lack of thyroid hormone, but it cannot discover whether you have thyroid antibodies or not.
So why is it so rare for a patient with hypothyroidism to have a complete thyroid panel ordered by their doctor? Probably because the standard treatment for hypothyroidism is pretty much the same for every patient regardless of the cause. If you don't have enough thyroid hormone you will usually be put on some form of thyroid hormone. It doesn't make sense to run in depth testing on the thyroid if your treatment for the thyroid is going to be the same anyway.
So is there nothing more that can be done? Is this the best that can be done for people with hypothyroidism today?
