Orlando Thyroid Project
Thyroid issues, especially in females, are rising at unprecedented levels. The most unfortunate part about this problem is that it is one of the most under diagnosed or misdiagnosed problems that a female can have. The Orlando Thyroid Project is beginning to change all of this. Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's disease are problems that can be helped, but your doctor must have the training necessary to understand the cause of the problem. This article helps to explain how the doctors at the Orlando Thyroid Project are changing the lives of people with thyroid dysfunction. The video below discusses this topic.
For decades the thyroid gland has had a few standard treatments. If your thyroid hormone is low, you get prescription thyroid hormones or thyroid hormone replacement, and if your thyroid hormone is too high you get your thyroid removed or irradiated. That may be a little oversimplified, but not much.
Doctors and endocrinologists typically run a TSH test (thyroid stimulating hormone test) to see if you have thyroid problems. If your TSH is high, it means that your thyroid hormones are too low and you need thyroid hormone replacement. The problem with this test is that it is only one of many factors that can be used to evaluate the thyroid and frankly it's not enough.
Orlando Thyroid Project Testing
Our clients in the Orlando Thyroid Project are put through a complete thyroid panel to find the source of their problem. There are approximately 10 steps in the process of thyroid hormone production and usage, and each must be evaluated to find the real problem. A large number of the clients in the Orlando Thyroid Project are actually found to have Hashimoto's disease. An autoimmune thyroid condition where the immune system is attacking the thyroid and causing hypothyroidism and at times hyperthyroidism. Simply running the standard TSH test is not enough.
I feel bad, but my doctor says my TSH is normal?
Many females complain about hypothyroid symptoms, but their doctor runs a TSH test and the test comes back supposedly normal. To understand this problem, you must first understand laboratory ranges and functional laboratory ranges.
Laboratory Ranges – are found by averaging all the typically unhealthy people that pass through labs getting blood work done.
Functional Ranges – are found by averaging a healthy population of people having lab work done.
The difference you will find when looking at these ranges is that functional ranges are much smaller than the typical laboratory ranges. If your TSH level is just slightly under the normal laboratory range, you will be told that you are ok, when in fact you are already far out of the healthy functional range.
The Orlando Thyroid Project doctors are trained in functional endocrinology and work within functional lab ranges. This stops them from missing problems that may have been overlooked in patients previous lab work. The precision of the Orlando Thyroid Project allows our doctors to achieve unmatched results for patients with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's disease.
